Koblenz to Oberwesel

Today's ride :42 Kms - (2 hours 52 mins riding)
Total ride : 591.3

I set the pace today and wanted to see everything.

First explore was at Rhens ... A cute little historic walled town.

The markings on the wall indicate flood levels through the centuries.

Another beautiful sculpture of daily life in old times.
City walls of Rhens.
City wall of Rhens alongside the river.

Marksburg Castle c1117
The river below the castle

A tiny little cute church in a little village on the way in Spay ... a town whose history goes back to the Roman times.

A rural scene looking back toward the river as we headed toward a road ..

Hay being made while the an shines, piles of the stuff everywhere ...

Riding along the Rhine, with Boppard in the background

Boppard town square

Our bikes resting while we find out why this town is so busy with people.

And one of  the reason is you can catch a chair lift to the top of a nearby mountain ...  the Vierseenblick

Take your bikes with you ....

Take in this breathtaking view .... And then ride the bikes down the hill!! (No pics of the ride down we were going too fast)

The view from the top

Information about the look out.

These castles (Liebenstein and Sterrneberg) are dubbed the Hostile Brothers, and have a story behind them

Liebenstein and Sterrneberg castles with Bornhofen town in the foreground.
Maus Castle
A random walled village tower along the bike path.

One of beautiful historic houses along the way between Zu Fellen and Reinfels

Another beautiful estate.

Reichenberg ruins along the way

The Rhine, I never got tired of riding alongside this.

Katz Castle

A clock shop in Sankt Goar

Rheinfels Castle

Some more beautiful domestic architecture in Sankt Goar

Maus Castle with Wellmich in the forground

A giant map on a post with Wayne pointing to where we are ...

The Lorelei - a famous rock on the Rhine - we almost missed it!
Even the train tunnel entrances look like Castles.
Train tunnel entrances were constructed to look like old churches or small castles in attempt to avoid destruction during the war as allies tried not to bomb historic buildings where possible.

Oberwesel - loved this walled historic town with Shonburg on the top of the mountain. We had a few hours to explore the town.

The gate to the Stadtmauergarten (or city wall Garden)

In the Stadtmauergarten

A small doorway into some tunnels in Oberwesel

Pulverturm tower

Kuhhirtenturm tower

Michelfeldturm II with St martins church in the background.

The view from the Garden at St Martins

The view from St Martins cemetery
A hedge maze in the Vicary gardens

The wonderful view of the vineyards from the town wall.

The view from he back of the village toward the north, from whence we came.

The cemetery in the Catholic Church St Martins.
I liked this headstone
The road that went under houses and through the very thick wall

Tunnel through the town wall

Stairs that led to the top of the wall - very steep.

Walking along the walls of the village

One of the turrets along the wall
Climbing to the top of the tower - 2 flights of very steep stair/ladders

A great view from up here

A view of the town
Going down was a lot scarier than going up.

Oberwesel
A memorial to the Jewish people from the town who lost their lives during WW2.

An historic building.

The train tunnel across the river from Oberwesel

Where we stayed the night - lovely B&B The Bonsch Cafe
