Scone to Singleton Day 1: Scone to Merriwa

Distance 63.4km

Elevation 862m

Maximum speed 54.4 km/h

Waking up and looking at the weather forecast and grey skies, we were worried about the prevailing headwinds and bad weather which were both expected to whip up in the early afternoon, so we left as close to 8am as possible.

The start of the ride was quite pleasant, with nice flat country roads to enjoy with a few sights on the way, but then we got to the hills and they kept going up and up and up with a few enjoyable downs in between. We were passed by some timber trucks as it was not a super busy road, but still a main thoroughfare between these towns. We had plenty of roadside stops to catch our breath and refuel.

The total ride was 64 kms, with close to 900m of climbing with some nice views from the top, and, a building head wind as the day wore on. I did get off and walk up two of the hills as my fitness level is much lower than it should be due to being off the bike for 6 weeks. I did finish and was very glad to do so.
I had e-bike envy very bad throughout the ride.
The countryside is very green and so very pretty.

The sandwiches, drinks and custard tart from the Merriwa Bakery were very welcome.
We ate them down on the riverbank while we waited to check into the Golden Fleece Motel. And what a lovely motel this is, with a fabulous host, Pam who made us feel very welcome.

After a shower and rest, we went for a walk around the town and were smitten. It is a lovely town with some historic buildings and a really nice feel.

Dinner at the RSL where they ran out of Lasagne so we had to settle for the Chicken Snitty. Early to bed where I had no problems sleeping!
