Day 10 - Utrecht to Lekkerkerk

Wednesday 13 June 2018

Distance 55.82
Time 3:22:52
Speed 16.5km/h
Elevation 17C

We had a reasonably early start with breakfast (and cheese loading) and headed into Utrecht to ride around and have a look at the city. We had visited Utrecht about 4 years ago but we had literally ridden through it very quickly and I wanted to revisit and explore further.

The morning was quite cold, but we rode around the Dom, the canals and the Ink Pot with the UFO left over from an art festival in 2005.

Miffy was everywhere in the city and we found out Utrecht was where the author came from.

After getting our fill of old buildings and canals we headed to the Railway Museum for its 10am opening. The Spoorwegmuseum was fantastic. It was huge and had so many much train memorabilia. I lost count of the number of steam trains they had, and the exhibits were brilliant. We were there for 2 hours, when we could have been there for days.

Outside the museum was this wall of names. These were Jews who had lived in Utrecht before WWII. This is a poignant reminder of the role the trains across Europe played in the holocaust.

It was time to pick up our luggage from the hotel and head for Lekkerkerk - our last cycling leg. Major mistake on Wayne’s part was that he did not allow time to feed me before or during this last 55km ride ... the going got slower, and slower and very slow. I was running with the empty light on for about the last 20kms. There was also a nasty head / crosswind which took the fun out of it. And it was cold, but the scenery was very pretty.

And that was a wrap for the day and week. Wayne had to take the hire bike back to the shop, I rounded up some food at the local shop and we had a picnic on our outside table in the afternoon sun to celebrate 650 kms of riding in the Netherlands and Belgium.
