After another hearty hotel buffet breakfast to cheese load up for the days riding we headed off in the direction of Breda with Dordrecht being a scheduled stop on the way.

Dordrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, it used to be the capital and is very pretty.

Once we got our bearings after riding around the town we visited the National Museum of Education where we spent about an hour looking at old things used in education in the Netherlands. It was much more interesting than it sounds. Entrance was with the NL Museumkaat which we had already decided we had got our moneys worth.

We then found out that a museum in the canal district was worthy of a visit. Simon Van Gijn was a very wealthy Banker who had no heirs, so he left his entire estate, intact, to the state to be used as a museum. This place was incredible, being filled with so many artefacts of the time he lived and even before. The best part was the attic filled with toys and stuff. It was a fascinating place to visit.

We also wanted to visit the Museum 1940-1945 but it was closed on Thursdays.

Back on the bikes and back to heading toward Breda. We took a couple of slightly wrong turns, one we ended up on a peninsula, which was quite historic with regards to WWII. We ended up having a snack there and enjoying the river traffic.
"This bank stands on a historic bunker from the Second World War, from which fierce fighting took place against the advancing German army in May 1940. Respect this place by leaving everything clean and tidy. Thank you!"

We crossed a mighty river The Hollandsch Diep with a very long bridge and had a few problems trying to find the way we needed to go as the signage was not very clear which was quite unusual. Once we figured out the way to go, we found a small town to have lunch in on a “Tarras” overlooking the very pretty canal. After our yummy lunch and a little bit of cooling down, we cycled through a number of other small towns and along some very pretty farmland and canals with swans and ducks and cows on our way to Breda. And we found icecream. It was a super hot afternoon.

We arrived in Breda, checked out Breda Castle which you can only look at from the outside, had a drink at a local restaurant and used their free wifi to find somewhere to stay. Again, we could not stay in town due to the lack of secure bike storage, so, off to a little outpost called Etten-Leur to stay in a place called the Trivium (Fletcher Hotels), which was a bit more upmarket than our normal resting places, but well within the budget.

The room was fabulously large, and after giving our clothes a wash & hung around the room to dry in the air conditioning (most unusual in Holland) we had a lovely dinner next to the fish and lilly pond until it started to rain - really hard. This not a good sign for the next day where it was predicted to be storms and heavy rain most of the day.
