Grieth to Orsoy

 Day 6
Days distance 63.66
Total distance 311.59

Today's adventure started with a fabulous breakfast in a most lovely dining room. After carb & cheese loading we got our bikes ready & headed off, turning left out of Grieth  to follow the Rhine Bicycle route (D8). This route took us past many fields of crops, dairy farms and we got to ride along the banks of the Rhine, racing the barges.

Beautiful flowering plants adorning our breakfast table
Our own house knights protecting us through the night.
The sun drenched breakfast room.
Preparing for the days ride. Our bikes had been sheltered in a very old barn for the night.
The old barn and back entrance to the estate.

Along the route we came across a bunch old stuff just in fields ...
Another random windmill we saw - this time a German one.
Had a quick waffle break on the Rhine, barge watching.

Rhine watching selfie.
Going through one of the small villages we came across this Australian flag flying oi, oi, oi!

Just riding along with some awesome scenery.
Then we came upon Xanten - wow wow wow - what a beautiful beautiful historic town. It also has Roman ruins. We liked it so much we stayed for lunch.
The town windmill

The wall to the Roman Archeolology museum
One of the city gates - the moat was filled in and there is a park that surrounds the city - so pretty
The church - again amazing architecture
Inside the Xanten Cathedral - just beautiful
After lunch we headed off and came to this ruin of a train bridge crossing the Rhine, a couple of young German men got to chatting with us & told us that it used to be a train bridge, but during WWII the German soldiers blew it up to stop access by the allies. Information about that here.

Remains of the Wesel Train Bridge

A map explaining it all - in German
I really loved riding alongside the Rhine

Another waffle snack to keep me going another 20kms. I am eating so much stuff I wouldn't normally eat because I can, and keep this glamorous look ...

Some thistle flowers on the way - taking time to photograph the flowers.

And then it was ice cream time ....

We got ourselves into Orsoy, cleaned up, had a rest, then went for a walk & this is what we found across the river ...  apparently it is one of the higghest chimneys in Germany, It is very tall.

Kraftwerk Walsum power plant, Duisberg.

Orsoy is another very old walled village with oodles of charm.

We have discovered we should be looking for these signs for bike friendly accomodation.
Our accommodation for the evening.

It is raining ... hard .... Not sure of the plan tomorrow ...
